The Motorbike Licence Part I – The CBT

Well, as a lot of items on my ‘to do’ list actually involve a motorbike, it was about time that I pulled my finger out and actually did what I had been debating for many years…. and try to pass my Motorbike licence!

From what had started as drunken chats like: “Yeah, that would be awesome, let do our bike licence” for about 3 years, it took an organised man (Tim Williams, later known as Captain Slow) to call around for quotes and availability for instruction to finally book us in for our CBT.

We (Tim, The Beast and myself) booked in as a group at RJH Group Motorcycle training in Congleton with a chap called Rob. Tipping up on the day we ran through the usual safty stuff (you can read more on Robs site, previous link), did a short theory session before we headed up to the local school to do some off road (on the playground) practical.3 Stallions

The playground was about the size of a 5-a-side footy pitch (plenty big enough for the kind of work we were going to be doing), and there they were 3 stallions, well, small fouls I suppose but when you haven’t ridden a ‘proper bike’, with gears since you were about 12 then they were plenty for us to handle for the day!

We spent the morning simulating junctions, getting used to shifting through the gears and just generally getting comfortable with the bike. All going well, Tim looking definitely more stable than the rest of us and The Beast looking like he was riding an overly shrunk circus bike!

After lunch it was time for a bit more live situation theory (roundabouts etc) and it was out on to the big roads with real people! very exciting! all went without a hitch and the day was rounded off with a few emergency stops, some U-turns and a lessons learnt. 20 minutes later we had our CBT certificates!!

Happy days, not it was just to book in for some proper lessons and work our way towards a test!
